How to make money online while traveling

If you’re hoping to travel long-term, or even full-time, you probably already know that you’ll need to get those pesky finances under control. The problem for many people who want to travel is they spend a year or two saving as much money as they can, and then travel until that money runs out. Then they go home and get stuck with reverse culture shock, wishing they could be back on the road.

If you choose to make money while traveling, you’ll have a very different experience. The first thing to understand is that your travel experience probably won’t be the way you imagined it. If you’re working while everyone else is going out, it can even feel like you’re getting the short end of the stick. I remember when I was in Thailand and everyone went out for a night of partying while I was stuck on my bunk bed, hunched over my laptop and trying to meet a deadline.

The only thing that got me through was the fact that all of those people who were going out that night would need to go home eventually. If I worked hard and worked smart, I wouldn’t need to go home at all.

There are numerous ways to make money online while traveling. One big thing to remember though, is you need to choose ways that won’t leave you feeling like your soul has been destroyed when you’re forced to do it for hours at a time. Do you need to love what you’re doing? No. But you have to at least have a little bit of interest, and if you have some passion or enjoyment in there, you’ll find it’s much easier to get to work.

Another good option is to work freelance. This can be a lot of work, especially if you’re starting from the beginning, but it can be well worth it since you’ll be location independent. The ability to work from anywhere will allow you to travel the world for as long as you like.

If you work for a company that allows you to work from home occasionally, you may find that they’re open to you working completely remotely. This can be an excellent option since you would be getting the same salary while working from a beach in Thailand or a town in Europe.

If you have skills that are transferrable into freelance work, your best bet is to go ahead and start freelancing before you even leave home. This will give you a chance to find some clients.

Another great option is to look into working as you go. There are a number of work away programs that allow you to work in different countries and you can even be sponsored for a visa for many of them.
