Why you should take a ski holiday in Switzerland

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery and resort charm this year, Switzerland is the place to be. This country has quaint ski villages dotted across it, and has a far more traditional type of ski village compared to the “super resorts” in France.

The best way to arrange a ski holiday in Switzerland is to fly into Zurich or Geneva, and then take the gold standard rail network in Switzerland, which can take you to a huge variety of Swiss resorts. This railway system is super comfortable, and you’ll find that the train gives you breath-taking views as you journey through cute, snowy mountain villages.

Along with the chance to get some serious skiing in, you’ll find plenty of other great things to do and see if you like the idea of ski holidays in Switzerland. Consider taking a day trip on the most famous rail in the world- the Glacier Express. You’ll travel from Zermatt to St. Mortiz or Davos in approximately 7 hours, and will see narrow valleys, untouched landscapes, and plenty of tight curves as you travel over 291 bridges and zoom through 91 different tunnels. The best thing about this train has to be the panoramic glass windows, which are from floor to ceiling in the train- meaning you’ll get to see everything.

One of the best places to visit is The Valais, which is also known as The Valley. This is a huge ski region in Switzerland, and is known for its chic Alpine resorts, the Matterhorn Mountain, and of course, the vineyards which you’ll find at upper Rhone River Valley. This is also home to two of the top resorts in the world- Verbier and Zermatt, and you’ll find impeccable off-piste and lift access skiing.

So when should you go? You’re pretty much guaranteed to have decent snow in Zermatt between late November and late April, which makes it a great choice if you’re the type to visit early or late season. While the skiing is some of the best, you’ll find that the town is also a joy to visit, and is both cosmopolitan and cute, with horse drawn sleighs, enchanting bustling streets, and a traditional feel.

If you like to party, Verbier is one of the best choices around. You’ll find a spectacularly beautiful (and sunny) landscape, excellent ski terrain, and top-notch nightlife. Two new lift connections have recently opened here, making it much easier if you’d like to explore each of the 4 valleys.

Here, you’ll also find Saas-Fee which has the Dom- the highest mountain in Switzerland. This is one of the most beautiful resorts you’ll ever see, and is completely traffic free, complete with cobbled streets and a “chocolate box” feel. This has one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps, meaning you’ll be sure to be able to fit a visit in at some stage this year.

If you’re considering a winter vacation, ski holidays in Switzerland are the perfect choice, and you’ll find plenty to do and see while you’re enjoying the snow.
