How to plan a road trip on a budget

Road trips are always a lot of fun, it doesn’t matter whether you’re checking out your county or heading to the USA to dance coast to coast. The difficulty is that some road trips can become expensive. What many people don’t realise is that this doesn’t have to be the case.

It’s simple enough to embark upon a road trip with friends without alarming your wallet in the slightest. Here, we take a look at how to plan your road trip on a budget.

Consider Fuel costs when planning your Route

One of the most significant expenses involved in a road trip is fuel. If you’re thinking about hitting the road for an extended amount of time, it makes sense to lend as much thought to the price of fuel as to the distance you’re travelling.

Consider, for example, that fuel costs less than half the amount in the USA than in the UK.

It’s not only the price of fuel at the pump that will factor into the overall cost but also the amount of fuel your vehicle consumes. Compare vehicles with AA cars and you’ll see that different models can use hugely different amounts of fuel.

Taking your trip in an efficient vehicle is sure to keep the cost low.

Save on Accommodation

Wherever you are in the world, accommodation is sure to be one of your biggest expenses if you’re keen on staying in hotels. For a longer trip, it can be far more cost effective to camp or stay with friends and saving money on accommodation will free up more funds to spend on the things you enjoy during your road trip.

Avoid Cities

Any seasoned traveller will be familiar with the cost of city life. No matter where you travel in the world, you can be sure that the cost of accommodation, food and transport is considerably higher in inner city areas than out of town.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that driving in cities is generally less enjoyable than driving through the countryside too. Avoiding cities will not only save you a bit of money, but will make your road trip that bit more enjoyable.
