Activities to enjoy on your holiday in the Netherlands

While the Netherlands might not be one of the best known European holiday destinations, its varied and stunning landscapes mean that Holland has something to offer all visitors.

Although its luscious fields and windmills certainly reinforce the idea of the country as an idyllic place to take a break, Holland is also great for those looking to enjoy an action-packed getaway; here are some superb activities you could get stuck into during your next holiday there.

Enjoy a spot of cycling

The Netherlands isn’t known as the cycling capital of Europe for nothing; it has more than 32,00km of designated bicycle paths just waiting to be explored. The good thing about cycling breaks in Holland is that they offer a fine experience for all abilities, and whether you’re a fledging beginner or a pedalling pro, you will be more than catered for. Among the best routes to cycle are labelled ‘LF’ (which stands for ‘landelijke fietsroutes’ – or ‘long distance’); there are around 20 of these across the country, which feature over 6,000km of unspoiled countryside for you to explore.

Take to the water

While it might be the only facility of its kind in the country, the Dutch Water Dreams Complex near Zoetermeer offer the ultimate white water rafting experience for those keen to get their heart racing. With water pumped electronically through a series of drops and in between plastic bollards, you will need to keep your wits about you to ensure you don’t get wet as your boat or kayak bobs around. Here, you can also enjoy a spot of surfing thanks to the sheet wave surfing system known as FlowRider.

Catch a wave

The Netherlands is renowned for its great surfing, with the coastline of the north bringing in barrel after barrel of white water from the North Sea. If you are a beginner boarder, it’s probably best to head to Ameland or Bergen Aan Zee. If you are more experienced and want to test your skills, however, then the beach at Domburg in the Zeeland province should offer the perfect conditions to do so.
