How to Save Money While Traveling

Whether you are planning a family vacation, going on a business trip, or attending an out-of-town wedding, you want to travel comfortably and conveniently without breaking the bank.

When you plan a vacation, a large part of your planning process is to know your options for transportation. You can rent a car, hire a driver, or use taxi services but that will be very expensive. If you want to save a little money, look into available bus schedules. Many vacation areas provide public transportation.

If you are traveling with a group or are on a budget, you should check into the bus rental cost in the areas you want to visit.

Save Money on Food

When you are away from home, you can’t go into your kitchen and cook your meals. You can eat all your meals out at restaurants but those costs will add up and end up being very expensive.

Another option is to book a room in a hotel that offers free breakfasts. There are many hotel chains that do include breakfast.

You can also get a room that has a kitchenette with a refrigerator and a microwave oven. Not that many people want to cook while on vacation, but having the option to prepare some of your own meals will save you money.

Look for Last Minute Deals

Many hotels and airlines offer last minute deals at tremendous savings. If you have specific dates that you need to travel or are less flexible, this might not be a viable option for you.

If you are more flexible in your plans, there are tons of sites online to check out special last minute deals.

You should also check into package deals that include the flight and the hotel. Some of these deals can save you a fortune.

Be Flexible with Your Flight Dates

If you have the ability to be flexible with your flight plans, you can save a lot of money. Discounted fares are often offered for off-hour traveling like the red-eye and early morning flights.

Holidays will probably cost the most money. If you planning on going away for a holiday, consider leaving a few days before the holiday to save money.

If you are taking off of work, request your time off starting in the middle of the week because Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often the cheapest days to fly.

Look For Coupons

If you look carefully and do research, you will find many discounts and coupons for travel, meals, hotels, and tourist attractions.

Don’t overlook the brochures displayed in the lobby of your hotel. You can also visit tourist information offices.

Use Social Media

Follow and like your favorite travel sites or places you want to visit on Facebook and Twitter. Many hotels, resorts, airlines, and travel companies will post and share their specials and deals on their social media accounts.

Some might ask you to opt-in to receive their deals to build their email list. This would work to your advantage too so you can be aware of current and future deals.

Off Season

Everyone wants to travel during the holidays. Because of this, airlines and hotels can charge top dollar. If you can, try to arrange your travel during offseason.

You can usually get better airline fares and cheaper hotel rates. Another benefit is that you will not have to deal with large crowds, but you should check to make sure that attractions are open.

Travel Light

Now that airlines are starting to charge for bags, some depending upon the weight of your baggage, you can save money by packing light.

Most people tend to pack way more than they need, but if you consider how much money you can save, you might have the incentive to only pack what you really need.

Check with the Locals

Talk to the people who live where you are vacationing. They can make recommendations on restaurants, hotels, local attractions, and public transportation.

Most people like to shop and buy souvenirs. Ask the locals where the best places to shop are and if there are any weekend markets and outlet stores.

Free Stuff

You have no choice but to pay for airfare, hotel accommodations, and food but there are plenty of free things to do while on vacation.

If you are vacationing in a warm climate, go to a lake or the beach. How about going to a street fair, cultural event, or a free concert?

Check with the local tourist office to see if there are any free movie screenings or other local attractions you might be interested in visiting.

Most importantly, enjoy your time away from home and save money where you can.
